October 11: World Obesity Day

World Obesity Day (October 11) was launched in 2015 to stimulate and support practical solutions to help people achieve and maintain a healthy weight, and to reverse the obesity crisis. We aim to increase awareness, encourage advocacy, improve policies, and share experiences. Our campaign reached over six million people in 2016, and with your help can continue to grow year on year.

On current trends, 2.7 billion adults worldwide will suffer from overweight and obesity by 2025.

Untreated, obesity is responsible for a significant proportion of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) including heart disease, diabetes, liver disease and many types of cancer. If we don’t take urgent action to treat or prevent obesity, the annual global medical bill for treating the consequences of obesity is expected to reach US$1.2 trillion per year by 2025.

We call on governments, health service providers, insurers and philanthropic organisations to invest in obesity without delay!

This means investing in…

  • treatment services to support people affected by obesity

  • early intervention to improve the success of treatment

  • prevention to reduce the need for treatment
