Free Breast Screening

On Friday 27th of October 2017, Stanbic Ghana Limited (Spintex Road Branch) organized a free Breast Cancer Screening and Education exercise for its male and female employees as part of the global breast cancer awareness month. This was in partnership with the Crown Medical Centre.

The medical director and CEO of the medical centre, Dr. Sadat Bawa took staff members through the process of how to self-examine the breast for early detection of breast cancer. He outlined the increasing number of cases of breast cancer among women globally and in Ghana, and said corporations should invest in preventive measures to ensure the health and well-being of their staff. "Their health is important to the productivity and achievement of the corporate objectives of organisations. A healthy workforce is a productive workforce."

Emphasis was made on the importance of early detection. The main objective of the exercise was to empower and encourage women to become proactive by engaging in preventive lifestyles, performing routine breast self-examination and getting appropriate screening every year at a professional level. During the screening and education sessions, staff members were encouraged to, at least self-examine the breast monthly. They were told that the more they did it the more they got better at the technique of examination.

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Ghana has an incidence rate of 2,260 per 100,000 women and 1% of cases of breast cancer is in men. Breast Cancer is the number two cause of death in Ghana and one of the leading causes of death globally.
